Who am I?
My name is John Hartley. Like many others, I became interested in the Great War when I decided to find out about my grandfather’s service. He served, throughout the War, with the 17 th Battalion, Manchester Regiment and lived to a ripe old age. It was this research that made me realise how little was known about the men who didn’t come back and who are now remembered on our local war memorials. I originally researched the men on the memorials around Cheadle, near to where I lived as a teenager.
The original plan for this current, wider project was to work in a voluntary partnership with Stockport’s Local Heritage Library. I would undertake all the research and write the men’s stories. In return, the Council would include the research on its own website – effectively as a “virtual war memorial” for the Borough. Although approval for the project was given at the highest level, technical difficulties have prevented the project coming to fruition. The Council was unable to give a timescale for launching the “virtual Memorial” and, in the spring of 2006, I decided to “go it alone”. I still hope that, at some point, the Council will find itself in a position to officially adopt the project.
If you have any information about the men included in this project, I’d like to hear from you. Similarly, if you like any further information from me, please get in touch. Click here to contact me.
