Private, 220014. “E” Company,2/4 th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment (formerly 5084, Cheshire Regiment). Killed in action 22 August 1917, aged 27. Born: Reddish. Enlisted: Stockport. Son of John & Eliza of Reddish. Husband of Ann, 15 Sandbach Road, Reddish. Buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Belgium.

Originally reported as missing, an official presumption that he must have been killed was made, by the War Office. In the summer of 1918. His body must have been found still later. Brother of John, commemorated on the Stockport War Memorial.

ALFRED EASTWOOD

Driver, 745032. 29 th Division Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 28 September 1918. Born: Denton. Enlisted: Stockport. Buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Ieper, Belgium.

Probably the A Eastwood commemorated on the Denton War Memorial.

Private, 8538. 17 th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Died of wounds 2 February 1916, aged 27. Born: Heaton Mersey. Son of Tom, 56 Tylde Street, Farnworth, Lancashire.

Enlisted September 1914 into the second of the Pals battalions of the Manchester Regiment. A keen gymnast and swimmer.

Sapper, 396533. 3 rd Railway Company, Royal Engineers. Died 14 January 1918, aged 34. Born & lived: Manchester. Enlisted: Stockport. Son of James & Mary of Ardwick. Buried in Southern Cemetery, Manchester.

TOM EDDINGS

Private, 30663. 15 th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Killed in action 19 August 1917. Born: Reddish. Lived: Godley. Enlisted: Stockport. Buried in Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery, Somme, France.

Commemorated on the Godley Hill War Memorial the Hyde War Memorial.

Lance Corporal, 6018. 1/5 th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. Killed in action 19 December 1916, aged 21. Born: New Mills. Lived: Stockport. Enlisted: Chesterfield. Son of Stephen & Ellen, 7 Bridge Mont, Whaley Bridge. Buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Commemorated on the Whaley Bridge War Memorial and is probably the man of this name commemorated on the Disley Memorial.

NORMAN EDMUND EDGE

Private, 19181. 16 th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Killed in action 11 July 1916, aged 20. Born: Cheadle. Enlisted: Sale. Son of Charles Henry & Julia, “Marbury”, Singleton Road, Kersall. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

ERNEST EDWARDS

Private, PS/7147. 2 nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Killed in action 28 February 1917, aged 23. Born: Dublin. Enlisted: Manchester. Son of David & Elizabeth, Rock Cottage, Roman Road, Tiviot Dale, Stockport. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Worked as a clerk for D Clifton Ltd, brewers, Cooper Street, Stockport. Posted as missing and an official presumption of death not made until January 1918. His brother, Norman, died on 9 October 1917. It is not known why Norman is commemorated on the local War Memorial whilst Ernest is not.

Private, 265592. 6 th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Date of death (cause unknown) 21 August 1920, aged 32. Husband of Marry Ellen, 30 Garrett’s Street, Stockport. Buried in Stockport Borough Cemetery.

CHARLES ELLIS

Wireless Operator. SS Ventmoor, Mercantile Marine. Date of death 14 February 1918, aged 18. Son of John & Mary, 42 Lingard Street, Reddish. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.

One of 21 who died when the ship was torpedoed and sunk 8 miles from Skros lighthouse.

Probably the F Ellson commemorated on the Crewe War Memorial.
