A GORDON

In its edition of 13 September 1917, the Stockport Express published an “In Memoriam” notice for a Private A Gordon, died 4 September 1914 whilst serving with the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. The notice had been placed by his brothers – Herbert, Fred, Tommy and Alfred.

It has not been possible to identify any such soldier from official sources – including the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the General Register Office list of overseas deaths or the CD-Rom “Soldiers Died in the Great War”. There was no civilian death in the Stockport area of a man of this name at the time. It is probable, therefore, that he died whilst in training somewhere in the UK. If ever it is possible to identify him and he was, in fact, serving with the army at the time (even in the UK), then he will be eligible for commemoration by the War Graves Commission.
