JOHN SLATER KELSALL

Private, 75904. 9 th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers (formerly 27444, Cheshire Regiment). Died of wounds 2 May 1918, aged 37. Born: Wilmslow. Enlisted: Stockport. Son of Thomas & Mary Jane, 18 Park Road, Wilmslow. Husband of Bertha. Buried in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, Nord, France.

Commemorated on the Wilmslow War Memorial and the Memorial at St Bartholomew’s Church.

Husband of Mrs H Kelsall, 56 Ridgway Street, Moss Side, Manchester. Buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France.

Private, 19172. 21 st Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Killed in action 1 July 1916, aged 20. Born & enlisted: Manchester. Son of William & Minnie, 40 Sherborne Road, Cheadle Heath. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

JOHN AUBREY KENDAL

Private, 1979. 5 th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Killed in action 1 July 1916, aged 21. Lived: Stockport. Son of Alice Maude Lambe (formerly Kendal), 239 Lea Road, Wolverhampton and the late Joseph Kendal. Buried in Gommecourt British Cemetery No. 2 , Hebuterne, Pas de Calais, France.

Originated from Wolverhampton and had worked for Messrs Lockett, a local firm of decorators. Worked in Stockport are at the Great Central Railway locomotive sheds. Known to have had a “sweetheart” called Ada. Originally reported as “wounded and missing”, in June 1917, the War Office made an official presumption that he must have been killed. His body must have been found later still.

Private, 5992. 1 st Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers (formerly 74620, Royal Field Artillery). Killed in action 4 April 1917, aged 28. Born & lived: Galway. Enlisted: Stockport. Son of Andrew & Catherine, Sloehill, Ballinamore Bridge, County Galway.

WILFRID KNIGHT

Sapper, 104456. 228 th Field Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 15 September 1916, aged 20. Son of Walter & Elizabeth, 18 Oswald Street, Reddish. Buried in Longueval Road Cemetery, Somme, France.

Worked as a joiner for Turners Ltd, Stockport Road, Longsight until he enlisted in August 1915. Originally reported as wounded and missing his body must have been found much later.

EDWARD KNOTT (served as Edward Kelly)

Private, 9694. 2 nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (formerly King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment). Killed in action 18 October 1914. Born: Oldham, Lived: Stockport. Enlisted: Ashton under Lyne. Brother of Herbert, 16 High Street, Stockport. Commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Comines-Warneton, Belgium.

An army reservist recalled when War was declared in August 1914.

HARRY KNOTT

Rifleman, Z/1847. 2 nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Killed in action 12 March 1915, aged 29. Born & lived: Reddish. Enlisted: Manchester. Son of Robert, 65 Liverpool Street, Reddish. Husband of Ethel Bullock (formerly Knott), 78 Seymour Street, Denton. Commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

Private, 18560. 9 th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Killed in action 3 March 1916. Born: Alderley Edge. Enlisted: Stockport. Son of Henry & Elizabeth. Buried in St Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L’Avoue, Pas de Calasi, France.

WILLIAM JOSEPH KNOTT

Private, 51796. Royal Defence Corps (formerly 4285, Cheshire Regiment). Died 24 July 1918. Born: Manchester. Lived & enlisted: Stockport. Buried in Buxton Cemetery.

Lived at 3 Arrow Court, Lord Street, Stockport with his wife and child. Died in an accident. From the Stockport Advertiser, 9 August 1918, “At the inquest, Wilfred Burton (15) said that on 22 nd July, he was driving a pony & dray down Spring Gardens when the pin broke causing the shafts to drop about the pony’s heels and causing the animal to run away. The lurry (sic) went forward. Sergeant major Jordan Slade and C T Gilchist said the deceased was crossing the roadway and sprang to the lurry in order to save himself from beign run over. The vehicle crushed him against a verandah post at the Picture House.”

 He was taken to Granville Canadian Hospital where he had an operation but he died and was buried with full military honours.

ABLE KNOWLES

Private, 243024. 1/5 th Battalion, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. Killed in action 16 September 1917. Born: Denton. Enlisted: Stockport. Buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Probably the A Knowles commemorated on the Denton War Memorial.
