Awarded the Military Cross – date unknown

Presumably the G W Neill commemorated on the Manchester University War Memorial amongst those who served with the flying services.

FRANK NELSON

Private, 26250. 16 th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. Killed in action 3 August 1917. Born & enlisted: Buxton. Lived: Stockport. Buried in Vanheule Farm Cemetery, Langemarck, Belgium but the grave was destroyed by shellfire. Commemorated on a special memorial at New Irish Farm Cemetery, Ieper.

Possibly the man commemorated on the Disley War Memorial.

JAMES HENRY NEWSTEAD

Private, 33671. 1 st Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Died 15 April 1917. Born: Reddish. Enlisted: Manchester. Commemorated on the Chatby Memorial, Egypt.

Aboard the transport ship Cameronia when it was torpedoed east of Malta. One of 127 men who drowned and have no grave other than the sea.

ALLAN NEWTON

Private, 2892. 1/6 th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Killed in action, 13 November 1916, aged 19. Born: Cheshire. Enlisted: Stockport. Son of Edwin & Sarah Elizabeth, 4 Portland Place, Stalybridge. Buried in Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, Somme, France.

Commemorated on the Stalybridge War Memorial and the Memorial at St Paul’s Church.

EDWIN NEWTON

Private, 267241. 2/6 th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 2 December 1917, aged 27. Born: Stockport. Enlisted: Norwich. Son of James & Margaret. Commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral, Nord, France.

Family homes had been at 308 Hempshaw Lane and 18 Gilmour Street. A keen member of Stockport Wheelers Cycling Club and known as Adam by his friends. His siblings – Harry, Bob, James and Mary lived at 96 Lowfield Road, Stockport. Harry served with the Army’s 53 rd Divisional Cyclist Company and Bob was a prisoner of war.

His Company Quartermaster Sergeant wrote to the family “He was shot in the front line trenches and one thing is certain he did not suffer pain as he succumbed within a few minutes…..We have lost a chum who was one of our best old men and a good soldier.”

 Possibly the man commemorated on the War Memorial at St George’s Church, Stockport.

HARRY NEWTON

Private, 26213. 8 th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Died of wounds 15 April 1916, aged 24. Born: Reddish. Lived: Holmes Chapel. Enlisted: Wilmslow.

Son of Joseph & Martha, Bank View, Goostrey. Buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.

Commemorated on the Goostrey War Memorial and possibly on the Swettenham, War Memorial.

Private, 12/1009. 12 th Battalion, York & Lancaster Regiment. Killed in action 1 July 1916. Born: Dukinfield. Lived: Stockport. Enlisted: Sheffield. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Son of George & Mary Ann, 2 Barlow Street, Gorton, Manchester. Buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, Nord, France.

Private, 19244. 2 nd/1 st Montgomery Yeomanry. Died (accident) 1 May 1918. Born & lived: Stockport. Enlisted: Chester. Son of William & Elizabeth, 12 Holly Street, Stockport. Buried in St Michael’s Churchyard, Benacre, Suffolk.

Private, 24384. 2 nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Killed in action 20 July 1916, aged 20. Born: Barrow in Furness. Lived: Stockport. Enlisted: Buxton. Son of Thomas & Mary, “Lily Bank”, Buxton Road, New Mills. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

His younger brother, Reginald, was killed on 27 May 1918. Both men are commemorated on the Disley War Memorial.
