Family originated from Rose Hill, Marple subsequently moving to Didsbury at the time of the War. After the War, Dora Rae was living at “Rhianfa”, Rhos Road, Rhos-on-Sea, Denbighshire. Colin had been connected with Marple Cricket Club and Heaton Moor Rugby Club and worked for a firm of shippers in Manchester. He had been wounded in the fighting at Gallipoli in 1915 and then served in Egypt before the Battalion moved to France & Belgium.

The name of S Rawsthorne is amongst those commemorated, as employees, by the Manchester Ship Canal Company. The Memorial is now preserved at the Boat Museum, Ellesmere Port.

Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (second only to the Victoria Cross) in 1917. The citation, published in the London Gazette on 24 August 1917 reads “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his platoon with the utmost skill and fearlessness, doing most valuable work and showing remarkable judgement and powers of leadership. He set a splendid example to all his men.”

Commemorated on the Stalybridge War Memorial.

CHARLES ROBERTS

In its edition of 7 December 1917, the Stockport Advertiser reported that Private Charles Roberts late of the Hawk Green Post Office had been killed in action of 19 November. No-one of this name is recorded by the War Graves Commission as having died on that date so it is impossible to be absolutely sure about identification. However, it does record a death the next day of Private Charles Roberts, 50612, 4 th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. This man is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium.

The man from Hawk Green had enlisted in January 1915 into the Army Service Corps and had seen action at Gallipoli. He spent a period of time in Citadel Hospital in Cairo suffering from shell shock and fever. He then spent three months at home on sick leave before being transferred to the infantry.

Before enlisting, he had worked as a manager for Southan Brothers, a firm of gentleman’s outfitters in Shrewsbury. In June 1915, probably just before going on active service, he married Elizabeth Jackson, from Hawk Green, at All Saints, Marple.

Able Seaman. SS Boynton, Mercantile Marine. Died when ship sank 24 September 1917, aged 46. Born: Stockport. Son of Duncan & Marion. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.

SS Boynton was a defensively armed merchant vessel which was torpedoed and sunk off Cape Cornwall. 23 lives were lost.

Worked as a pawnbroker’s assistant. Enlisted 15 June 1915, going overseas on 25 October. Transferred to Machine Gun Company on 2 December.

Sergeant Major, 3863. 2/6 th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Died 4 March 1915, aged 42. Born: Staffordshire. Lived: Stockport. Son of Thomas. Husband of Clara Alice Rudge (formerly Rowen), 34 Dover Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester. Buried in Cambridge City Cemetery.

Married with two children. Had been a regular soldier for 22 years. Joined the staff of the 6 th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment at Stockport Armoury in about 1910. He was due to be discharged but rejoined the army when War was declared. Died at his billet at Aylestone Road, Chesterton, Cambridge.
