William was the eldest son of William Henry Axon and Florence Axon (nee Chambers), 25 Fox Street, Stockport and he had been born in Heaton Norris. It’s believed that his parents married between January and March 1894.

The family attended Hanover Church and, as a boy, William had also attended the Church Sunday School. He enlisted around Christmas 1915 into the local Territorial Battalion – the 1/6th Cheshires, having a service number of 2928. At some point, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion and was killed in fighting described here.
