Ernest was the son of the late Henry Greenhalgh and Elizabeth Greenhalgh. He had been born in Marple and lived at the family home, 12 Derby Street. The 1901 Census shows that Elizabeth was working as a cotton weaver. There is no mention of Henry and it must be presumed that he had already died.

Ernest enlisted in the autumn of 1915 and would have gone overseas in the following spring. He was killed in the action described here and, as with many men killed that day, he has no known grave.

Further information about Ernest, including a photograph can be found in the book "Remembered" by P Clarke, A Cook and J Bintliff.
