Julius GREGORY
Rank: Private
Number: 4904
Unit: 20th Battalion ROYAL FUSILIERS
Date of Death: 20 July 1916
Age: 34 (based on 1901 Census)
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

Julius was born in Romiley, the son of local butcher, Thomas Gregory and his wife Julia. He was the youngest of their four children living at home when the Census was taken in 1901. Their address at the time was Doctor's Brow, Romiley but they moved shortly afterwards to new shop premises at Stockport Road. Julius was then serving an apprenticeship as an electrical engineer and, presumably, followed this profession into adulthood. When War came, he was living in the Levenshulme district of Manchester and enlisted into the army in the city. He went overseas on active service with the Battalion in mid-November 1915 and was killed in the attack described here.
