Alfred had been born in Stockport, the son of John Thomas Grimshaw and Henrietta Grimshaw. At the time of the 1901 Census, the family was living in Cheadle, but later moved to 9 Torkington Street, Edgeley.

The Census records Alfred, then aged 13, working as an errand boy. His father, 48, was working in the hatting industry as a felt hat shaper. Henrietta was aged 44. Alfred had several siblings - Ethel (5), Florence (5), Frederick (17, a wood winders piecer), Gertrude (20, felt hat trimmer) and Herbert (22, felt hat shaper).

Alfred's service number suggests he was conscripted into the army during 1916. He was killed during the Battle of the Lys.
