Stanley Grummitt had been born at Withington, Manchester and, when the census was taken in 1901, was living there with his parents, Henry and Emma and his two older brothers, Henry and Norman. By the time of the Great War, the family had moved to 4 Gill Bent Road, Cheadle Hulme. All three brothers would serve during the War and Henry and Norman are thought to have survived.

The “Thomas Cornwall” was a 324 ton “Mersey Class” Admiralty trawler, armed with one 12 pounder gun and one 3.5 inch gun. Stanley was killed when it was in collision with another vessel, off Flamborough Head and sank.
