John Grundey was born in Hazel Grove but when war was declared in August 1914, he was living in Upper Hale, Surrey. He had moved there to work at Farnham. He volunteered for the army at Hartley Wintney and his service number indicates that this was between May and July 1915.

Military records indicate that John died of wounds that he had received in combat and was in a military hospital when he died. Throughout the summer and autumn of 1916, the Battalion had seen action at the Battle of the Somme. It cannot be known when John was wounded.

Further information about him can be found in the book "Hazel Grove to Armageddon" by John Eaton.
