James William HADFIELD
Rank: Private
Number: 44759
Unit: 4th Battalion SOUTH WALES BORDERERS
Date of Death: 10 May 1918
Age: 25
Cemetery: Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq

James and his younger brother, Robert, were both born in Reddish, the sons of Robert and Sarah. The couple had married in 1893 at St Mary's Church, Heaton Reddish and the family continued to live in the area at least until the early 1920s. In 1901, the family home was at 31 Frances Street and, two decades later, at 41 Weston Street.

The 4th Battalion had spent the early months of the War fighting at Gallipoli but after the failure of that campaign it moved to Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq). James's service number suggests that he probably joined it there. Army records published after the War show that James "died" - normally a designation indicating a death from natural causes. About 50% of the deaths in Mesopotamia were form illness and disease.
