All that is known of William’s early life is that he was born in the Stockport area on 28 February 1883. In 1905, he had married Eliza Peet in a civil ceremony at Stockport and they would have three children together. Their home, locally, was at 42 George Street, in the Newbridge Lane area of town. In the early years of their marriage, William would only be home infrequently, when he was on leave having joined the Navy as a young man. More recently, he had completed his time and returned to a civilian life in Stockport.

However, William was still a naval reservist and when War was declared on 4 August 1914, he was recalled to service. He was killed at the Battle of Jutland.

In 1919, Eliza married John Atherton and they continued to live at George Street.
