Edward had been born in Reddish and his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Ann, still lived there at 14 Kendall Street. The 1901 Census lists his job as a “railway taker” (sic).

He enlisted into the local Territorial Battalion and his original service number, 2763, suggests this was probably in the autumn of 1914. He was killed on the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres.
