Rank: Private
Number: 266504
Unit: C Company, 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 31 July 1917
Cemetery: Menin Gate Memorial, Ieper, Belgium

Nothing has been discovered about John's private life. He enlisted in the army in Stockport and his original service number, 3974, confirms he was not an early recruit, probably joining in 1915. He was posted as missing after the Cheshires attacked German positions on the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres described here.

Afterwards, the Stockport Express, in its edition of 6 September 1917 published this notice:-

"Should this meet the eye of any friend of Private John Hall, 266504, 10th Platoon, C Company, 6th Cheshires, who was reported missing on July 31st, will they kindly communicate with his father Mr John Hall, baker, 114 Higher Hillgate, Stockport, who will be deeply grateful."

It is not known if Mr Hall ever received any information but John's body was never recovered and identified and he is today commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at Ieper.
