Lewis had been born in Halifax and his father James still lived there. The 1901 Census shows Lewis, then aged 20, still living in the town and working as a house painter.

At some point, he married  Edith and they lived in Cheadle Hulme. After the war, Edith had moved to 24 Clark Avenue, Doncaster. Lewis enlisted in the army at Stockport, probably as a conscript, during 1916.
