T A (probably Thomas Hall) HALL
Rank: Rifleman
Number: 32952
Unit: 3rd Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade
Date of Death: 20 August 1917
Cemetery: Messines Ridge (New Zealand) Memorial, Belgium

The name of T A Hall is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial as someone who served with an “overseas” force. Attempts to positively identify him have so far failed.

He is likely to be the man listed above (although it has not been possible to establish that this man had a middle name). Born in Stockport and still having close family in the town, Thomas had emigrated to New Zealand, where he earned his living as a rabbiter. He enlisted into the New Zealand forces, leaving to return to the UK on 15 November 1916, as part of the country’s 10th Reinforcement draft. No doubt he will have had time to visit Stockport to see family – he had listed, as his next of kin, his sister Mrs Sarah Hibbitt who lived at what is believed to be the Hall family home at 6 Wellington Road North.

Thomas was killed in action in what appears to have been a rare quiet day during the Third Battle of Ypres. He has no known grave and was probably killed by shellfire.
