Walter Redvers HALL
Rank: Trimmer
Number: 867606
Unit: HMS Eaglet Mercantile Marine Reserve
Date of Death: 30 January 1919
Age: 18
Cemetery: Stockport Borough Cemetery

Very little is known about Walter, except that he was born in Nottingham, the son of Vincent and Edith, later of 17 Lucas Street, Stockport.

Then as now, HMS Eaglet was a naval training unit at Liverpool. Whilst the fighting had stopped when the Armistice was signed the previous November, there was no guarantee that it would not start up again. As such, young men continued to train to serve in the forces. Those who died, up until 1921 when the peace treaties were finalised, are regarded as war casualties and are recognised as such by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which maintains Walter’s grave at Stockport. The cause of his death is not known – it may have been illness or accident.
