This name is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial amongst those who served with “other regiments” – usually a county regiment not from the north west. Nothing has been discovered to positively identify who the man might have been. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission does list one possibility – a man who enlisted into the army at Manchester. This is the only known connection with the wider locality. He died on 26 October 1917 whilst serving with the 1/5th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers and was the son of a Wesleyan Minister, Rev James Halliday and his wife.
