Herbert had been born in Disley but, by the time of the 1901 census he was living in the Hazel Grove/Bramhall area and was working as a stone quarryman. At some point, the family moved to Marple. Herbert's service number suggests he was not an early volunteer and was possibly conscripted, at Stockport, during 1916.

In the middle of 1917, he will have received the news that his brother, John, had been killed and, in the Spring of 1918, he would have learned that his other brother, Thomas, had also been killed. Both are commemorated on local memorials. Herbert was himself killed in action in the fighting recorded here.

Further information about the brothers can be found in the book "Remembered" by P Clarke, A Cook and J Bintliff.
