Herbert HAMER
Rank: Private
Number: 11056
Unit: 1st Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 3 September 1916
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

Nothing of known of Herbert's life other than he had been born with the parish of St Thomas's church, Stockport and enlisted into the army in Stockport, probably in the autumn of 1914.

He is recorded by the military authorities as having died from wounds. An account of the action in which he will have injured is here. Herbert will have been taken to a Regimental first aid post just behind the front line and almost certainly died before he could be moved further down the casualty evacuation chain. Many of the small cemeteries such as the one Herbert was almost certainly buried in were destroyed by shellfire during the course of the war or the precise details of its location were lost. As a result, many soldiers, like Herbert, now have no known grave and are commemorated on one of the Memorials to the Missing.
