Walter's parents lived at 15 Emperor Street, Portwood, Stockport. The family worshipped at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.

Walter enlisted in the local Territorial Battalion during the autumn of 1914. His original service number was 2736 and he probably went on active service in the late spring of 1915. Sometime later, he was wounded and was sent back to "Blighty" to recover in hospital in Bristol. He later rejoined the battalion and was killed in the attack on St Julien on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele. Walter was originally posted as missing and it was not until April 1918 that the military authorities made an official presumption that he must have been killed. His body was never found and identified and he is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at Ieper (Ypres).
