Cyril John HARDWICK
Rank: Ordinary Seaman
Number: J/36512
Unit: HMS Indefatigable ROYAL NAVY
Date of Death: 31 May 1916
Age: 18
Cemetery: Portsmouth Naval Memorial

Cyril was born in Brecknock, on Christmas Day 1897. His father, Thomas, originated from there and is thought to have married Rose there. When the Census was taken in 1901, the family had moved to 32 Hargreaves Street, Colne where Thomas was working as a checker for one of the railway companies. A bit of extra income was being earned by taking in a couple of his colleagues as boarders.

Some time after this, the family moved to Cheadle Heath and lived at 22 Heathside Road. Cyril attended the local council school and was a member of the Church Lads Brigade at nearby St Augustine’s Church. When he left school, he also went to work on the railways and was employed at Hazel Grove by the Midland Railway Company.

It’s not known when Cyril joined the Navy but he was probably not a pre-War boy recruit and had enlisted for the duration of the War when he became 18. He was a signaller aboard ship and was killed when it was sunk at the Battle of Jutland.
