In the late spring of 1897, William Hargreaves and Ruth Smethills got married in the Stockport area. They would have two sons - Ernest and Jonathion and, at the time of the 1901 Census, the family was living at 11 Stanbrook Street in the Lancashire Hill area of town. Other children were born later but their names are not known. By the time of the Great War, they had moved to the Reddish area and were possibly living at 34 Coronation Street, which was Mrs Hargreaves' address in the early 1920s.

Nothing is known of Ernest's early life, except he was engaged to Mary Sims of 36 Avenue Street, Portwood. This may be the same Mary Sims who is recorded by family history website, CheshireBMD as getting married in 1924 to a John Mellor.

Ernest joined the army at Stockport, almost certainly as a conscript when he became 18. His service number suggests he was an original member of the 2/9th Battalion which first went overseas on active service in March 1917. A few months later he was killed in this attack.
