Nothing is known of Alfred's early life, except that Regimental records published after the War indicate he had been born in the Stockport area. He was married and lived with his wife and three children at 105 Adcroft Street. He earned his living working at the cotton doubling mill of Thomas Reynold Ltd on Newbridge Lane.

On 31May 1915, Alfred travelled into Manchester and enlisted into the Army. He was a late recruit for the seventh of the Pals Battalions which had been formed by the Manchester Regiment in the previous autumn. He will had just enough time to complete his training before the Battalion left to go on active service in November.

Alfred would be killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
