John was the son of William and Hannah Harrison and had been born in Stockport. In 1901, at the time of the Census, he was working as a warehouseman for one of the local hat-making company's but, by 1914, he was working at Wilson's Dye Works, Offerton.

He is believed to have got married, to Mary Kent, in the spring of 1903 and they lived at 28 Lomas Street, Edgeley with their daughters, Hannah and Mary.

He enlisted, at Stockport and his service number suggests that this was sometime between December 1914 and April 1915. On 9 April 1916, he took part in an attack described here. Afterwards he was posted as "missing" and it was not until December 1917 that the War Office declared that he must have been killed. His body was never found and identified and he is commemorated on the Basra Memorial to the Missing
