Harry had been born in Bollington, near Macclesfield, the son of James and Elizabeth Helen. By the time of the 1901 Census, he was living in Stockport.  He was married to Elizabeth Mary and they lived at 50 Lingard Street, reddish.

He was a pre-war member of the Territorial Army and would have been mobilised in August 1914 when war was declared. An account of the Battalion's early months of service is here. According to the booklet "Stockport Lads Together", by David Kelsall, was wounded three times during his war service, but died of influenza whilst in hospital in Boulogne.
