Rank: Private
Number: 49053
Unit: 1st Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 21 August 1918
Age: 22
Cemetery: Adanac Military Cemetery. Miraumont, Somme, France

Hugh had been born in Salford but at some time his parents, Mr & Mrs J R Hartley, moved to 21 Gorsey Mount Street, Webb Lane, Stockport. Hugh's service number suggests he was not an early volunteer and may have been conscripted, at Stockport, in 1916. He was killed in an attack described here. He will have originally been buried in a small cemetery near to where he fell. After the Armistice, these small burial grounds were closed and the bodies moved to Adanac Cemetery. Many of the burials are of Canadian troops and the name of the cemetery was formed by reversing the spelling of Canada.
