George Thomas HAWKYARD
Rank: Private
Number: DM/2/171200
Unit: Army Service Corps
Date of Death: 21 May 1917
Age: 28

The 1901 Census shows George's family living at 104 Stockport Road, Cheadle. He was recorded as being aged 12 (having been born at Mossley). His parents, Homer and Mary, later lived at 18 Jackson Street, Cheadle.

He appears to have served with the Army Service Corps in a Motor Transport Company. The "DM/2" part of his service number confirms he was a driver attached to a unit within the Second Army, which had been formed in late 1914.

George is believed to have been discharged from the army some time before his death and returned to his employment as a calico dyer. He died at home at Jackson Street from testicular cancer with secondary growths in the abdominal organs.
