Attempts to identify this man whose name is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial have been unsuccessful. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records the names of 17 men called W or B Haworth. None appear to have any local connection. The only man serving with a Scottish Regiment was born in Blackburn and enlisted there.

However, the Heaton Moor Memorial also records the name of W B Haworth who served with the South Wales Borderers and it seems likely that this is the same man. It is possible that he originally joined a Scottish Regiment but was transferred to the Borderers before going overseas. This might account for the error on the Stockport Memorial.

The name "W Haworth" also appears on the "Addenda" panel of the Stockport Memorial as one of those notified after 1925. It may well be that his family submitted his name when they realised it was not amongst those serving with Welsh Regiments, perhaps further complicating the matter for later researchers.
