Joseph was born in the parish of St Peter's C of E Church, Stockport. As a young man, he served with the Cheshire Regiment as a regular soldier, seeing action in South Africa for two years, during the Boer War. At the time of the 1901 Census, he had returned to Stockport and was working as a labourer in a pot works. Shortly afterwards, probably in1902, he married. By the time of the Great War, he was living at 11 Lomas Street, Edgeley with his wife and daughter. He worked for Mr Mark Lane as a plasterer's labourer.

Joseph enlisted in September 1914, probably not going overseas until September 1915. He was killed during an enemy attack described here.
