Arthur was the son of John Charles Heywood and Sarah Jane Heywood of 27 Cain Street, Edgeley and, later, of 9 Roseamund Street east, Chorlton on Medlock. He was a printer by trade.

When War was declared in August 1914, he and his three best friends all joined up together, travelling to Wigan to do so. Neville Lewis and Joseph Fox were killed on the 28th May. Arthur Heywood would be killed a few days later. Only Charles Worsnip would survive. An account of their early months of army service can be found here.

Arthur and his comrades went into action at Gallipoli on 6 May and he was killed in the attack described here.
