Date of Death:

Attempts to identify this man have been unsuccessful. His name is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial amongst those serving with the Cheshire Regiment. It is inserted at the bottom of the panel, out of alphabetical sequence and is, clearly, a late addition.

There are no men called W Heywood amongst the Regimental records of fatal casualties, nor are any listed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as having died whilst serving with the Regiment. Records at the National Archives indicate four men of this name did serve overseas with the Regiment at some point, but it is not known where they came from. It is likely that one of them was a Stockport man who died some time after the war ended, but before the Memorial was unveiled in 1925. If he died after 31 December 1921, he would not be included in the War Graves Commission records as "war dead".
