Leonard was born in Bredbury and lived all his life there, at least until the War came along. His parenys, John and Mary, had married at St Mark’s Church in 1890 and the 1901 Census records Leonard as their eldest child, then aged 6. He had a younger sister, Beatrice, who was born about 1897.

As far as can be established, Leonard never served abroad on active service and died of natural causes, probably whilst still in training.
