Rank: Private

Unit: 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 14 November 1916
Age: 19
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

John was the son of George & Maria, 45 Bulkeley Street, Edgeley. He had been born in Stockport and that is where he enlisted. His number suggests he was not an early recruit, probably enlisting during 1915.

The 1901 Census records George, then aged 39, as a tobacco worker and Maria as aged 29.

On the day before he died, John took part in the Battalion's first major attack. It had been successful and the next day was spent in consolidating the newly captured position. John was probably killed by enemy shelling sometime during the day. An account of the two days is here.
