Donald is possibly the youngest of the many people commemorated on our local memorials. He was born locally on 24 September 1899 and was the son of Luke & Alice. The family lived at 7 Bellfield Avenue, Cheadle Hulme. Later, his parents moved to 30 Station RoadMr Hobson had been stationmaster at Cheadle Hulme, but since 1910 had been in business as a coal merchant and house agent.  Donald previously attended Cheadle Hulme School and was later educated at Stockport Technical School where he was nominated to join the Navy. He was a popular member of the church choir, Sunday school, cricket club and Boy Scouts.

He had recently been on leave and only re-joined his unit on 29 July. He drowned while swimming with friends at Devonport. Attempts to revive him failed. It is not known what happened.
