George Arthur HOPWOOD
Rank: Private
Number: 266011
Unit: 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 31 July 1917
Age: 22
Cemetery: Menin Gate Memorial, Ieper, Belgium

Arthur was born in Bredbury and his parents, Samuel and Emma, lived at 140 Higher Bents Lane. Nothing else is known about his life except that he enlisted in the army at Stockport. His original service number, 3010, suggests that this would have been between the late autumn of 1914 to early spring 1915. He was killed in the Battalion's attack on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele. As with many of those killed that day, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at nearby Ieper (then Ypres).
