Arthur was born in Birkenhead and, at the time of the 1901 Census, was still living there working as a labourer in a flour mill. At some point between then and about 1915, when he enlisted, he had moved to the Stockport area and had married Ethel. They lived at 31 Athol Street, Heaton Norris.
