Travis had been born in Manchester and was still living there at the time of the 1901 Census, when he was shown, aged 19, working as a piecer at a cotton mill.

He later moved to the Stockport area, working as a spinner at Pear Mill. He married and had one child and the family lived at 44 River Street, Brinnington, Stockport.

He enlisted in the army at Stockport on 16 October 1915 and was assigned to the local Territorial Battalion. He was killed in the unit's first major attack described here. Travis's body was never recovered and identified and he is commemorated on the nearby Memorial to the Missing.
