Nothing is known of Thomas' personal life other than he had been born within the parish of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Stockport and enlisted in the army in the town. His service number suggest he was an early recruit, probably in the autumn of 1914.

Thomas is recorded as having died of wounds and is buried in a cemetery used by military hospitals in the Boulogne area. It cannot be known for certain when he was wounded but the Cheshires were involved in a battle on the 21 August which is described here.
