Jack and William Hurst are names amongst those recorded on the Heaton Mersey War Memorial but it has not been possible to identify them. It is probable that they are related.

The Stockport War Memorial includes two men called William Hurst. One served with the Cheshire Regiment, the other with the Dragoons. Similarly, two men identified only as J Hurst are also on the Stockport Memorial – no further details are known.

It is possible that he may have been John “Jack” Hirst, who joined the local 6th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment shortly after the commencement of the war (service numbers 2152 and 250380). He died on 25 July 1917 and is buried in Bournemouth Cemetery.
