William Clifford IRVING
Rank: Private
Number: 290705
Unit: A Company, 18th Battalion WELSH REGIMENT
Date of Death: 2 December 1917
Age: 20
Cemetery: Willow Grove Cemetery, Stockport

Little is known about William. He was born in Preston, the son of David and Barbara Ann Irving. It is not known when the family moved to the Stockport area but David died in the town in 1915, aged 55. In the early 1920s, Mrs Irving was living at 18 Wellfield Road and this is thought to have been the family home for some time.

William's service number indicates he enlisted into the army, as a conscript, sometime after the beginning of 1917. It also indicates that he undertook his training with the Regiment's 7th Battalion. He will have been transferred to the 18th Battalion before going on active service overseas.

It is known that he died at Perth War Hospital. Regimental records published after the War record that he "died" - usually a designation indicating a death from illness, accident or other natural causes not associated with combat. However, the local newspaper, reporting his death, suggested that he had "died of wounds". The death certificate would confirm cause of death but it has not been obtained by this website.
