Nothing is known for certain about Charles' pre-war life, except that he was born in Hazel Grove and enlisted into the Army at Stockport. His service number indicates this was in November or December 1914.

The 1901 Census lists only one Charles Johnson who was born in Hazel Grove and this is a boy, then aged 8. This is, almost certainly, the same person. Lack of funding for this project prevents a more detailed examination of Census records to identify his family.

Charles was killed in fighting at the Battle of the Aisne. He has no known grave. Further information about him can be found in the book "Hazel Grove to Armageddon" by John Eaton.
