Joseph JOHNSON
Rank: Lance Corporal
Number: 277262
Unit: 2/7th Battalion MANCHESTER REGIMENT
Date of Death: 5 August 1918
Age:
Cemetery: Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, Somme, France

Almost nothing is known for certain about Joseph's life. Regimental records published after the War indicate he had been born in Hazel Grove. The family history website, CheshireBMD, notes the birth of a boy of this name in the area in 1884 and, whilst it is impossible to be sure, this is probably the future soldier.

Joseph's service number was not issued until after the beginning of 1917 so it is unlikely that he was an original member of the 2/7th Battalion which went overseas on active service in March of that year. He will have joined later as part of a draft of soldiers sent to replace casualties. The published records indicate that Joseph "died". This is a designation usually suggesting a death from natural causes rather than "died of wounds" or "killed in action".
