David probably lived all his life in the Stockport area until he enlisted into the army. In 1901, at the Census, David was 16 and working as a doffer in a cotton mill. Doffers were usually boys or young men whose job was to remove filled bobbins from the spinning machines and replace them with empty ones. In 1906, he married Florrie Mason at All Saints' Church, Heaton Norris. After the War, Florrie was living at 55 Hatherlow Street, Stockport but it's not known if this was the home she shared with David.

603rd Company was formed in November 1915 and this is probably when David joined the army. All of its overseas service was in Malta where it was responsible for a variety of transport roles - moving goods, equipment and casualties. Military records indicate David died of natural causes.
