Henry Porter KNIGHTON
Rank: Private
Number: 64932
Unit: 11th Battalion Cheshire Regiment
Date of Death: 20 April 1918
Age: 25
Cemetery: Haringhe Military Cemetery, belgium

The 1901 Census notes that Henry Knighton, aged 38, a railway shunter; his wife Alice, 31 and their son, Henry were living in Stockport.

Henry had been born in the town and he enlisted there, leaving his wife Agnes at their home at 21 Kent Road, Cheadle Heath. His service number confirms he was not an early volunteer and was probably conscripted sometime after mid-1916.

He took part in the fighting at the Battle of the Lys and it believed that, on 20 April, he was seriously wounded. He would have been evacuated to a Casualty Clearing Station, some miles away at Haringhe, where Army surgeons would have tried, unsuccessfully, to save his life.
