Almost nothing is known of George's life except that Regimental records published after the War indicate he was born in the Stockport area and enlisted into the Army in the town. He is, almost certainly, the George Kniveton recorded by family history website, CheshireBMD as having been born in 1896.

The Battalion's official War Diary notes that, on 17 April, it was in reserve in the town of Arras and commenced training near the racecourse. This continued for several days until, during the afternoon of the 23rd, it moved forward to relieve another Battalion in the front line at Monchy. The Diary has no details of events on the 26th noting only that four soldiers were killed. Most probably, George and the other three were killed by shellfire.
