Joseph was born in the parish of St Thomas’ C of E Church, Stockport. His parents, Thomas and Martha Jane Barlow, lived at 34 Ardenfield in the Hillgate area of town. He worked at McClure’s cotton mill in Stockport until he enlisted on 4 September 1914.
