Unit: 1/5th Battalion Cheshire Regiment
Date of Death: 5 September 1916

Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

Charles was born in the Longsight area of Manchester. At the time of his enlistment into the army, he was living in Heaton Mersey, Stockport. Other than the fact he enlisted at Chester, nothing is known about his life.

During the evening of 4 September, the 5th Cheshires arrived by train at the Somme village of Corbie where they went into billets for the night. The Battalion History notes that it was pouring with rain and, the next day, they marched to the Citadel Camp. This is thought to be at the village of Fricourt, some 25 kilometres away. There is no mention of any casualties but Charles is known to have been killed outright. He has no known grave.
